Westell Product Development
Westell Technologies, Inc. is
a Broadband Access Solutions Company, providing leading broadband
products, service solutions and conferencing solutions for carriers,
service providers and business enterprises worldwide. It delivers
broadband access solutions for the residential, SOHO and small
business markets.
Westell has developed several Broadband Access Solutions some of which involved the development effort of the software engineers at SSI Embedded Systems Programming. Some of the products that include development effort from SSI's software engineers are Westell's WebShare Networking Software, WebShare Pro Networking Software and Access4000 Full Router.
Westell's WebShare Networking Software
Westell's WebShare Software was developed for Westell's WireSpeed Ethernet ADSL modems. WebShare enables multiple users to simultaneously share a single high-speed ADSL Internet connection. This is a perfect solution for low cost multi-user residential or small business networks.
Some of the WebShare features developed by SSI include:
- Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) to connect
to the Internet Service Provider.
Taking Westell's PPPoA Router as the base, SSI has developed the PPPoE (RFC2516) method of data encapsulation to the R5xx series of Westell's ATU-Rs.
Network Address Translation (NAT)
SSI has enhanced the existing NAT on Westell's R5xx series by adding the static NAT capability that enables the forwarding of incoming unsolicited packets to a pre-configured server on the LAN. - SSI developed a browser based applet and a Windows application
utility to upgrade and configure their DSL modems over a 10
Base T network via a proprietary protocol over IP. The user
interfaces contained many common controls to view, upgrade,
provide status and configure the modems. The GUI interface displayed
the modems model number, serial number, version of software
image running, description of downloadable software images,
an upgrade screen to download new software images to the modem,
a configuration section with VPI/VCI and bridge information,
as well as a status area for displaying messages. The windows
application was supplied on a CD or floppy media, which contained
an InstallShield install/uninstall program developed by SSI.
Westell's WebShare Pro Networking Software
Westell's WebShare Pro is an enhanced version of WebShare, supporting more sophisticated features than WebShare.
Some of the WebShare Pro features developed by SSI include:
- Integrated Firewall
SSI has developed the Configurable Firewall on the WebShare Pro as an aid to enhancing the network security by providing packet filtering. This Firewall includes three standard factory default levels of security that can be selected based on the level of network security required by the user.
- Port Forwarding
SSI has added the Port Forwarding capability to the router. Port Forwarding allows users outside the router's LAN to access the LAN (specific addresses on the LAN). This allows the WebShare Pro users to have a server on their LAN that could serve outside users. Port Forwarding allows the user to setup several such servers one as a http server and other as a telnet server etc.
- VPN support via Point-to-Point Tunneling
Protocol (PPTP)
SSI has developed the support for PPTP VPN Tunnel through the WebShare Pro (NAT router).
- Support for simultaneous bridged PPPoE session through PC
and NAT router PPPoE session.
SSI has enhanced the PPPoE on the WebShare so that it allows simultaneous PPPoE sessions - PPPoE session from a PC with PPPoE shim and a PPPoE session through the NAT router.
- True Always On connection
SSI has added the Password remembering feature so that the user can configure the router to remember the password. This feature along with the auto-reconnect feature (also developed by SSI) enables a "True Always On" connection through the router.
Westell's Access4000 Full Router
The Westell Access4000 IAD combines a multi-port hub with modular architecture capable of providing wireless & wireline networking to businesses, residential users, and corporate employees. Businesses can use the Access4000 to physically network multiple computers together to share an ADSL line and Internet connection at lower costs than today's alternate technologies (T1 services). Residential users can use Access4000 to serve as a peripheral-sharing device using a combination of networking technologies (HPNA, Ethernet, and Wireless LAN) simultaneously, as desired.
To make the Access4000 router more functional, Westell has sought the development effort from SSI's engineers.
Some of the Access4000 Full Router features developed by SSI
include:
- Routing Table Configuration from the Web
Browser of the Access4000 Full Router.
SSI has added the capability to configure routes from the user interface of the Access4000. With this functionality an Access4000 user can view/add/delete/save routes on the router.
- Support for the Internet routing protocols
- Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path
First (OSPF) protocol.
SSI has developed support for RIP and OSPF routing protocols on Access4000, using WindRiver's RIP and OSPF software. A user can enable one of RIP or OSPF on Access4000. When the Access4000 router has one of these routing protocols enabled it communicates with other routers on its attached networks. During this communication it exchanges routing information with other routers. This allows Access4000 to have a more updated routing table, which gets updated in the face of topology changes.
