Phone company seeks a solution to migrate their 3270 mainframe-to-terminal leased-line environment to a complete Ethernet LAN environment.

The Customer

AT&T Data Center in Denver Colorado supported nation wide network connectivity for other AT&T business units.

The Problem

The AT&T Denver facility needed to migrate their 3270 mainframe-to-terminal leased-line environment to an Ethernet LAN environment with minimal downtime and keeping their legacy desktop equipment.  Within this migration AT&T didn't want to lose any of the features (SDLC, BSC, LPR/LPD, RTM, Remote Configuration, ...) they currently had and wanted to keep in place their familiar desktop environment.

The SSI Solution

SSI already had a solution for this migration called LANPanther.  LANPanther was architected, designed, developed, and tested by SSI Engineers.  It used the latest industry standard processor technology, operating systems and network cards on the market.

LANPanther is an advanced hardware/software consisting of a standard Pentium System, UnixWare, Synchronous cards(s), Ethernet/Token Ring card(s) and LANPanther software.  The solution provided SDLC and/or BSC to TN3270 protocol conversion, as well as LPR/LPD printer support for existing 3270 cluster controllers and their respective devices . . . devices that cannot be connected directly to a TCP/IP network. With LANPanther, traditional devices such as 3270 displays and printers can have LAN-attached 3270 host access until a transition to a pure Client/Server environment can be achieved. Because LANPanther appears as a Front-End Processor to the CU devices, their existing configuration was not affected.

The complete LANPanther software was developed by SSI and included the following:

  • Unix drivers to support the Arnet 570i Synchronous and SMC TokenCard Elite card(s)
  • Unix application software for SDLC or BSC to TN3270E protocol conversion, TN3270 RTM, LPD, Mail and Web services, and Administration
  • Motif and Java graphical software application to administer the system with an on-line help system.  The Java application was used to remotely to administer the system from a browser.
