About SSI Embedded Systems

SSI Embedded Systems Programming has provided experienced product development for hardware-based real-time software products to our clients since 1992. We are conveniently located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago.

To date, SSI has contributed to various products in the biotech, automotive, appliances, consumer electronics, cellular, retail, printing, manufacturing, security, sensor, wireless, and telecommunications industries. We are grateful for the continuing opportunities to apply our experience with embedded systems including product prototypes, device driver development, bootloaders, protocol stacks, firmware, and embedded interfaces.

2008 - Continued growth results in additional hiring and broader client base.

2007 - SSI's 15th Anniversary celebration and open house was well received by the 60+ clients, engineers, and networking friends that attended. Established formal partnerships with TI, Freescale, and Digi International.

2006 - The Wireless Sensing product developed in collaboration with Tekscan wins Best of Sensors award at Sensors Expo 2006. In addition, the product gets listed in Sensors Magazine Top 50 Products for 2006. Launched sister company, SSI Wireless. Purchased and moved to a larger building next door to make room for additional staff. Moved December 2006.

2005 - In addition to helping current customers with their deliverables, SSI develops an off-the-shelf RF wireless sensing product.

2004 - Acquired several new clients and partnerships for Chicago area hi-tech companies, completed rapid prototypes for US Biometrics, Category Solutions, and Touch Sensor. Finished full product development in appliance controls. Added to staff and expanded office space.

2003 - SSi moves to expanded facilities in Glen Ellyn, IL. Solutions in 2003 include development for Invensys Appliance Control and Schott (oven controls) - two respected companies in their industry. Solutions also include an in-store trial for an inventory control system, and a solution for the retail stocking industry using machine to machine(M2M) and sensors technology.

2002 - Even while the technical industry adjusts to market fluctuations, SSI partners with a few new clients - a cash register company and a gaming company. Acquired a reseller for LANSleuth, Naper Solutions.

2001 - Our customer base grows to include a couple of cutting edge Venture Capital Funded startups, including one in streaming media devices and one biotech company. For them, SSI created custom TCP stacks and drivers, as well as a high-level Windows application used for controlling microscopes.

2000 - Contract opportunities expand to the retail and printing industries.

1999 - Began doing business as to better reflect the growing expertise in a large variety of embedded platforms. We continue to expand our customer base of hi-tech Chicago, Illinois area clients.

1998 - Motorola and Westell each contract SSI for embedded software development. The long term relationships with these companies provide opportunities for SSI to develop embedded software for automotive and switching/routing products including device drivers and protocol stacks. Lucent also contracts SSI for a network conversion product.

1997 - As demand for our developement expertise increased, the SSI team's entire focus turned to Contract Development, assisting Chicago area clients in the area of real time embedded software for a variety of hardware devices. SSI moves to a larger lab facility in Aurora, Illinois.

1996 - LANPanther is released, a gateway product tailored to large corporations migrating from IBM concentric backbones. Other AT&T sites contract SSI for communication software projects.

1995 - SSI develops and releases two software packages: LANSleuth, a software network protocol analyzer, and DejaView, a TCP/IP communication package providing LAN connectivity to synchronous and asynchronous hosts.

1994 - SSI's key client, Memorex Telex, goes bankrupt. Their customer base moves support contracts to SSI for all maintenance and feature enhancement needs. One customer is AT&T. SSI proceeds to design, implement, and provide training for a nation-wide software monitoring and distribution center, allowing AT&T's internal IT organization to support its infrastructure of 3270-type controllers.

1992 - SSI Embedded Systems began in 1992 under the name of with a team of 12 engineers from AT&T Bell Labs. During the years at Bell Labs, the group had worked for a data communications division, which was sold in 1990 to Memorex Telex. In 1992, Memorex decided to relocate the group from Naperville IL to its headquarters in Raleigh, NC. The resulting upheaval opened up an opportunity for a group of experienced engineers to form a consulting company and stay in the Chicago area. They successfully secured a multi-year contract with Memorex Telex to write embedded software for communications controllers.
